ARTIST TALK: Angell Gallery Artists

Please join us for a virtual viewing of recent projects and video artworks by Erika DeFreitas.

Erika DeFreitas is a Scarborough-based multidisciplinary conceptual artist. She explores the influence of language, loss and culture on the formation of identity with textile-based works, and performative actions that are photographed; placing an emphasis on process, gesture and documentation. DeFreitas is a recipient of the 2016 Finalist Artist Prize from the Toronto Friends of Visual Arts, the 2016 John Hartman Award, and was long listed for the 2017 Sobey Art Award (Ontario). She is a graduate of the Masters of Visual Studies Program at the University of Toronto. Exhibition sites have included Angell Gallery, Project Row Houses in Houston, Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, New Jersey, the Art Museum at the University of Toronto, Art Souterrain festival in Montreal, The Art Gallery of Windsor, Platform Centre for Photographic & Digital Arts, Centre [3] for Print and Media Arts, Gallery 44, The Art Gallery of Mississauga, the Pollock Gallery at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and the Houston Museum of African American Culture.

EXHIBITION TOUR: Early Snow: Michael Snow 1947-1962

James King is this region’s most notable arts and literary biographer and has published
biographies on David Milne, William Blake, Margaret Laurence, Jack McClelland,
Farley Mowat, Lawren Harris, and most recently Michael Snow. In this
presentation, King will walk us through Early Snow and highlight some of the
works while discussing the process of curating the exhibition!

ARTIST TALK: Charles Campbell
Presented by Wil Aballe Art Projects | WAAP (Virtual)

Charles Campbell, a Jamaican-born multidisciplinary artist, writer and curator of note, based in Victoria, B.C., will speak to his art practice, which includes recent exhibitions at the Perez Art Museum, Miami, the Havana Biennale, and the Brooklyn Museum. Campbell holds an MFA from Goldsmith College and a BFA from Concordia University. He has also curated exhibitions in the UK, Canada and Jamaica including Anything With Nothing: Art From the Streets of Urban Jamaica at the National Gallery of Jamaica where he was Chief Curator.
